Chapter 1 : Red Vines and Failed Romance

Chapter 1: Red Vines and Failed Romance
I bit off a piece of Red Vine while Beck and I were walking home from the movies. We saw one of those movies that made you think, one of those movies that cold change your life. We saw Moonrise Kingdom. The theater was practically empty, since the movie came out May 25th and we ere going July 2nd. It was the story of how Sam, a Khaki scout and foster parent reject, and Suzy, a girl who has not-so-good parents and can sometimes go crazy, run away together, which also forms a search party. It was funny to find they knew what they wanted more than anyone else. It made me consider my current love life. Sure Marc is a great teenage romance, but I could never truly love him like those two, and they were twelve!
Before I allow you to plunge deeper into my psyche, I think you should know who I am. I am Adeline McIntire.  My last name was inherited from my guardian, but I will tell you more of him later. I can read minds and histories upon a first glance. If I hear someone and don’t see him or her, my power is useless. I can know everyone in a single moment.
Now back to my love life. When I was looking for someone to be with, I noticed most teenage boys weren’t…suitable for my tastes. So, I chose the one whop repulsed me the least with their thoughts and feelings, Marc. I did love him, even in a romantic way, but that had long since faded over this summer. Our once burning love now left burning embers in my heart.
I was contemplating this as I was eating my Red Vines. My brother, Beck walked quietly beside me. He was eighteen years old and I was sixteen. He was probably thinking about his girlfriend, Colette.
Colette was a sweet girl. She was smart, but not smart enough to see the obvious. Beck had few things he loved, and she was not one of them. Colette was named after the character in Les Miserables, since her father played Jean Valjean in a local production of the musical. He just didn’t recognize the poor girl’s name was Cosette, not Colette. Her father became famous. Her mother was already ripe with fortune.  The beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, rich, French girl was any man’s dream, but not Beck’s. Colette wanted him to love her, but his heart was in the logical. Any girl who could get him out of that would be the one.
Any boy who could trump or feed my love of movie romance, bacon, true romance and Red Vines would be my true love.
Red Vines broke the silence. “You know I really love Red Vines.” I admitted, taking another bite.
“Twizzlers are better.” Beck responded.
I shook my head. “Red vines are softer and less sweet than Twizzlers.”
“Say what you want, Twizzlers are better.” Beck replied.
“But Twizzlers don’t turn your tongue red!” I stuck out my tongue so he could see.
“Ew! You know I hate germs! And the human tongue is a germ factory.” He responded.
I still kept my tongue out. He backed away. I mildly tortured him with my Red Vine tongue for about ten minutes. My tongue was actually red it was cool.
When the time to be immature was over, I asked “So how did you like the movie?”
“I can’t believe you dragged me to that thing.” Beck responded. “It was so girly. It was a freaking love story.”
“Yes, but about a Khaki Scout and a tortured teen. It conveyed deeper meaning, it provoked thought… feelings.” I responded
Beck remained silent for the whole rest of the walk home. When we reached our house’s front stoop, he turned to me. “I don’t feel.” He spoke simply. He unlocked the front door afterwards.
Dr. McIntire (my guardian) greeted us at the door. Beck swiftly made his way to his room. I just sat on the sofa.
Dr. McIntire asked, “How was the movie?”
“Really amazing. You and I have to see it again.” I responded.
He laughed, “Well I never saw a Bill Murray film I didn’t…”
“The one with the underground city that made no sense.” I countered.
He stopped laughing and gave me a smile. “Well, I never saw a Bill Murray comedy I didn’t like.”
I laughed. I bit off another piece of Red Vine. He laughed again.
He told me “Give me one of those.”
I handed him a Red Vine. He bit the top off, and then pulled both sides of the Red Vine apart. That blew my mind. Red Vines could have double the awesomeness!
“I need to go to sleep, I am tired.” I told him, still with a huge smile on my face.
Dr. McIntire nodded. “See you in the morning.”
I snuggled up in bed. I turned on my music and drifted off to sleep. I fell asleep wondering if my Suzy will ever find its Sam.
