Another Jukebox Musical Act 1 Scene 2

SCENE 2- Dad is wiping out cups and Emma is sitting at the barstool, leaning on the bar and staring at the door, bored. Mom is doing something embarrassing. Piano sits in the corner on wheels
Emma- I loathe slow days so much.
Dad- Cheer up, Emma! I didn’t raise you to be the downer I married the downer.
(Colton enters)
Colton- (to Dad) Sorry I was late, boss. (Notices Emma) How come I have never met her? (Gestures to Emma)
Dad- The last thing I need to do is have my wife complaining about Emma’s singing and her perfect boyfriend.
Colton- How do you know I would be so good?
Dad- I have had you work at this diner for two years now. You don’t break hearts.
Emma- (protesting) Dad, would you quit being so sexist? I can choose my own goddamn boyfriend.
Colton- All I really want is to hear you sing right now.
Emma- I can do that. What song?
Colton- Just whatever you are feeling.
Emma- Do you like the Carpenters?
Colton- Sure.
Emma- (music starts sings All You Get From Love Is A Love Song) Like sailing on a sailing ship to nowhere
Love took over my heart like an ocean breeze
As seagulls fly I knew that I was losing
Love was washed away with the drifting tide
Oh it's a dirty old shame
When all you get from love is a love song
That's got you laying up nights
Just waiting for the music to stop
It's such a dirty old shame
When you got to take the blame for a love song
Because the best love songs are written
With a broken heart
And now the tears in my eyes are ever blinding
The future that lies before me I cannot see
Although tomorrow I know the sun is rising
Lighting up the world for everyone, but not for me
Oh it's a dirty old shame
When all you get from love is a love song
That's got you laying up nights
Just waiting for the music to stop
It's such a dirty old shame
When you got to take the blame for a love song
Because the best love songs are written
With a broken heart (repeat until end)
Colton- You have such a beautiful voice.
Emma- Thanks.
Colton- (nervously) I can play piano and sing a bit.
Emma- Oh?
Colton- (nods) One of my many talents.
Emma- Play for me.
Colton- Ok. (Colton pushes the piano on wheels closer to the front)
Emma- Wow I didn’t know we had a piano.
Colton- You do, it just kind of collects dust in the corner. (Plays the beginning to Close to You and Christian enters to sing the lyrics to Emma as Colton opens his mouth to sing them.)
Christian- (woos Emma as he is singing) Why do birds suddenly appear?
Every time you are near?
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
Why do stars
Fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you…
Emma- Oh my! Who are you?
Christian- My name is Christian Thorne. I am rich and can finance any dreams you may have. Plus, the cover of GQ doesn’t lie. (Straightens his collar)
Emma- Well you are amazingly rugged. (Gets closer to Christian)
Colton- (getting in between the two and looking at Emma) Your dad wouldn’t let this jerk be your boyfriend, Emma.
Dad- He has money. As long as he keeps his paws off her and forks over the money I am fine.
Mom- Marry him! If he’s got cash he needs you in his will!
Emma- Ew! No!
Christian- Lets go somewhere a bit more… private shall we?
Emma- (nods) Maybe you can hear me sing!
Christian- And baby, I will make you famous.
(Emma, Mom, Dad, and Christian exit, leaving Colton alone.)
Colton- I’ve got to cut the Carpenters. (Sings You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away by The Beatles, on acoustic guitar) Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feeling two-foot small
Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
How can I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
